Kennett netters fall in districts; Holcomb upends Clarkton

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Kennett Lady Indians tennis team ended its season on a mixed note, finishing seventh in the Class 1, District 2 Tournament here Thursday.

In area volleyball action Thursday, Kennett defeated Hayti; Caruthersville defeated Senath-Hornersville 25-12, 17-25, 25-15; Holcomb defeated Clarkton, 25-16, 25-16; and Delta C-7 defeated Southland 25-17, 23-25, 25-22.

In junior high football, Kennett's eighth-graders downed Charleston, 44-6.

In singles play at Sikeston, Samantha Brown lost her first match to No. 2 seed and district runner-up Amanda Dooley of Dexter, while Christina Dewrock fell to Katherine Nickelson in her first match.

In doubles' play, the duo of Brook Burcham and Susan Shetley won their first match before falling in the quarterfinals, while Christy Doughten and Hanna Lack fell to the district runners-up in their first match.

Charleston won the tournament with 25 1/2 points, while Kennett finished with 11 1/2.

Volleyball

Kennett def. Hayti

At Hayti, the Lady Indians won their fifth straight match and moved to 14-7 overall and 4-2 in the Bootheel Conference with a two-set victory.

Hayti won the junior varsity match in three sets.

Holcomb def. Clarkton

At Holcomb, the Lady Hornets (14-5-3) avenged a season-opening loss to the Lady Reindeer with a strong performance Thursday in a non-conference matchup.

"My girls were on tonight," Holcomb coach Gentry Vancil said. "They played hard and not too many balls fell. It's a good win for us going into the conference tournament next week. It's a big win for us."

Holcomb also won the junior varsity contest.

Clarkton (11-8) plays at Gideon today at 4:30 p.m.

Caruthersville def. Senath-H'ville

At Senath, the Lady Lions fell to 5-12-2 on the season and 2-4 in the Bootheel Conference despite a good team effort against conference leader Caruthersville.

Senath-Hornersville won the junior varsity contest 16-25, 25-15, 25-12.

Delta C-7 def. Southland

At Deering, the Lady Chargers improved to 6-9 on the season as it avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Rebels in a non-conference matchup.

Candace Braswell and Lindsey Blankenship stood out in the victory for Delta, which travels to Senath-Hornersville for a 4:30 p.m. contest today.

Southland's jayvee won 21-25, 25-22, 25-21.

Football

Kennett 44, Charleston 6

At Metz Cherry Stadium, the Indians jumped out to a 38-6 halftime lead and rolled past the Bluejays in the season finale for the Tribe.
