Lady Indians' tennis season ends in sectional loss against Clayton

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

ST. LOUIS -- The Kennett Lady Indians tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 5-4 loss to Clayton in Class 1 sectional action here Saturday.

Clayton (9-5) later fell to John Burroughs, 5-0, in the quarterfinals later that day.

Despite the season-ending loss, Kennett coach Janet Hilburn was pleased with her squad's play Saturday.

"My girls played very good this weekend," said Hilburn. "Hanna Lack and Christy Doughten had a great three-set doubles match (winning in three sets). Megan Walker, Susan Shetley and Anna Grantham all had strong singles showings. ... I was very pleased with my team's effort. They kept playing and never gave up."

Shetley downed Maddie Harned 7-6, 7-5, while Walker got by Mary Goodman 6-4, 7-5 and Grantham took a 6-1, 6-4 win over Taylor Freeman.

At No. 1 singles, Brook Burcham lost 6-0, 6-2 to Catherine Greenberg, while Lack fell to Drew Leftkowich 6-1, 6-3 and Doughten suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Ellie Jacobs.

"Brook came up a little short in her singles match, (but) she played well and competed to the very end."

The future is looking bright for Kennett girls' tennis. Four of the Lady Indians' top six -- Burcham, Shetley, Lack and Grantham -- are all eligible to return next season.
