The most amazing thing about this group is they have been able to accomplish this with basically five players playing every minute of every game. Though what they lack in depth, they make up for in effort as new coach Nathan Baker has the Chargers playing high-pressure defense and attacking the rim on offense, allowing them to get numerous opportunities from the free throw line.
Sloan Richardson helped Delta seize the momentum early by hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to lead the Chargers (4-6) to an early 15-9 lead. Richardson would finish with five 3s and a total of 20 points on the night to lead Delta C7. The Chargers received a balanced scoring effort in the second quarter which allowed them to take a 30-20 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs struggled all evening long on offense thanks in large part to very poor shot selection from their guards as they put up numerous jump shots with hands in their faces.
Coming out of the locker room it was more of the same as Delta put the game out of reach by outscoring North Pemiscot 19-14 in the third period to give them a 15-point advantage (49-34) heading into quarter No. 4.
Though Richardson led Delta in scoring Tuesday, sophomore point guard Damien Flowers also was key for the Chargers. When Flowers wasn't slashing through the lane and getting circus shots to fall, he singlehandedly broke a fullcourt press, or broke down the defense with the dribble and kicked to open teammates for jump shots. Though only a sophomore, he has definitely emerged as the leader of this promising young team.
James Blanton added six fourth-quarter points as Delta worked the clock and put the game on ice.
Richardson, Blanton, and Flowers all finished in double digits with 19, 14, and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Chargers offense.
Michael Gilboe paced the Mustangs with 21 points.
In the junior varsity contest, North Pemiscot did win by a score of 38-34.
