SENATH, Mo. -- The Senath-Hornersville Lions have struggled with consistency at the plate at times this spring, even being no-hit twice earlier in the season.

However, the Lions didn't show a lot of that inconsistency Tuesday, using a pair of four-run innings to roll past the Holcomb Hornets 8-1.

"We swung them better today than we did the last two games we played," Senath-Hornersville coach Randy Smith said. "We just can't get consistency. Hopefully the last couple of weeks we'll start swinging a little better."

In other games Tuesday, it was Campbell 8, Bernie 4; and Delta C7 8, Hayti 6. In softball, it was Kennett 9, Campbell 3; and Senath-Hornersville 7, Caruthersville 1.

At Senath, the Lions (9-9) didn't need long to pull ahead.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Tony Scott scored on Ernesto Garza's fielder's choice to open the scoring, then Exon Moncada doubled to leftfield to plate Heath Horvath and Dustin Hunter for a 3-0 lead. Matt Fouts capped the rally by singling home Garza.

Senath-Hornersville added to its lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Fouts tripled down the right-field line to score Hunter, then Wes Westmoreland singed to drive in Fouts and make it 6-0. Two batters later, Scott singled to plate both Westmoreland and Skyler Droke and complete the rally.

The Lions 6-7-8 hitters -- Moncada, Fouts and Westmoreland -- stepped up Tuesday, combining for five RBIs and five hits, two going for extra bases.

"I've juggled it here and there and it seems like it's been different guys every time we play," said Smith. "We can't get everybody doing it at once. But hopefully come district time we can get all the kids pulling their weight."

While Senath-Hornersville's hitters were getting it done at the plate, pitcher Ben Salas turned in a strong game of his own. The hurler struck out nine and walked just one while scattering six hits in the complete-game victory.

"He's pitched real well all year," Smith said. "He's a strike-thrower and we seem to play well behind him. He seems to keep everybody on their toes."

Holcomb (7-8) scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning, when Dylan McCormick's base hit chased home Bryce Wyrick.

Chad Adams took the loss for the Hornets, allowing eight runs (six earned) and eight hits in three innings of work.

"I thought Chad threw well again for us today -- several of Senath's hits just had eyes and fell for them," Holcomb shortstop Corbin Clark said. "Every time we play Senath we know we are going to see a solid pitcher who keeps the ball down and hits his spots. Salas did that for them today."

Fouts, Westmoreland and Scott each had two hits for the Lions, while Moncada, Fouts and Scott each drove in a pair of runs.

Holcomb heads to Bernie on Thursday, while Senath-Hornersville takes on district foe Campbell that day as well.

"Hopefully we can come back and beat them," Smith said. "They beat us early in the year. Hopefully we can come back and beat them Thursday."

Campbell 8, Bernie 4
At Bernie, the Camels scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 4-all tie and get past the host Mules.

Campbell (10-4) led 4-0 in the middle of the sixth inning, but Bernie scored twice each in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to force extra innings.

Kyle Matthews was 3-for-4 with a solo home run, while Eugene Powers was 2-for-4. Cale Weeks and Zach Jackson each had three RBIs, with Weeks adding a home run.

Cote Harralston got the win in relief of Weeks, who started and went five innings.

Softball
Kennett 9, Campbell 3

At Campbell, the host Lady Camels took an early 3-0 lead, but the Lady Tribe bounced back with strong hitting and pitching in the late innings to improve to 9-0 on the spring.

Kennett tied the game at 3 in the top of the second inning, then scored once in the top of the fifth to go ahead and five times in the top of the sixth to break the game open.

Laurel Scales pitched four innings of hitless relief for the win, striking out 11 and walking one. In her last nine innings, Scales has racked up 24 strikeouts out of 29 batters she has faced.

Allyson Luce, Anna McMahan, Jordan Wagster and Taylor Wake each had a pair of hits for the Lady Indians, while McMahan, Wake and Ciara Dewrock each had a pair of RBIs.

Kennett takes on Caruthersville today at Indian Park before heading to Holcomb Thursday.
