In game one, Dunklin County was never threatened as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.
The Redbirds took advantage of five Dyersburg walks and an error to gain their lead. Dunklin County scored three runs -- two of which were earned -- without the benefit of a hit in the first as Gage Blue, Trey Bazzell and Billy Fender recorded RBIs.
Head coach Aaron New spoke well about his team's plate discipline, particularly in that first inning.
"We like to see guys be aggressive, but to be aggressive within the strike zone," New said. "I think we did a great job of that tonight."
Dunklin County blew the game open in the second inning with six runs on four hits to open up a 9-0 cushion for starting pitcher Thomas Stillman. Cameron Wallace, Andy Lack, Stillman and Bazzell all recorded hits in the inning to spark the six-run outburst.
Dunklin County added three more runs in the fourth to cap their 12-run performance.
On the mound, Stillman worked three scoreless innings while giving up three hits and striking out two. Two of the baserunners Stillman yielded were erased by double plays, while another was picked off, as he faced the minimum of nine batters in three innings. New was pleased with his defense's ability to erase runners the way that they did.
"If you're going to be a good ball club, you've got to be able to turn double plays, and we did that tonight," New said. "That really helped our pitchers out a lot."
Logan Dollins relieved Stillman in the fourth to earn the save in two innings of work. Dollins was scoreless in his work, giving up a walk and a hit while striking out four.
Redbird pitchers faced just two over the minimum in their five innings, and New said that could be credited to their ability to throw lots of strikes.
"We'd like to see our pitchers get a ground ball within four pitches, throw first-pitch strikes and not walk anybody," New said. "We feel like if they can accomplish those things then they'll have a successful outing, and that's what they were able to do tonight."
In game two, Dunklin County jumped out to another lead in the first inning as Andrew Hooper and Daniel Lockhert crossed the plate on RBIs from Adam Grantham and Blake Wilbanks.
Dyersburg answered back with two runs in the top of the second, but the Redbirds plated another run in the bottom of the frame to go ahead for good when Matt Rainey scored on Hooper's RBI triple to make the score 3-2. Dunklin County would score once in the third, six times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to give them another mercy rule victory, 13-3.
Dylan Lynn earned the win for Dunklin County in relief of Joe Campbell, who tossed two innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one. Lynn struck out four in two innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit. Bazzell threw a perfect fifth and struck out the side, and Lack finished the game with an inning of work with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Redbirds will play another doubleheader at home against Charleston on Thursday. First pitch will be at 5:30.
