The Kennett School District Board of Education recently announced the nomination of Alayna K. Palmer as its nominee for the John T. Belcher Memorial Scholarship.

The selection of Palmer as the nominee was based on academic achievement, need, leadership abilities, and the quality of an essay which focused on public education.

Palmer was one of five seniors who applied for the scholarship nomination. Additional applicants included, Bobby Hrissikos, Katie R. Potts, Jae W. Ratliff, and Amanda J. Ward.

The John T. Belcher Memorial Scholarship was established by the Missouri School Board Association (MSBA) in Memory of John T. Belcher, a man that was instrumental in developing a number of innovative financing programs improving the learning environment for students attending thousands of Missouri public schools. Belcher died in 1989 following a battle with cancer.

Palmer will receive a scholarship of $750 awarded by the Missouri School Board Association to continue her education and stands to be chosen as the statewide winner in which she will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

Palmer along with other regional winners will be officially recognized at MSBA's Spring Meeting in April 2006.
