CARDWELL, MO. -- The Cardwell City Council reminded the public of the Independence Day celebration in Thursday night's regular meeting.

The celebration will begin Saturday, July 3, at 9 a.m. at the bandstand in Cardwell.

Mayor David Bishop announced performers include Danny Cox and his band along with multiple churches adding to the entertainment.

Food will be available, including ribs and Boston Butts and ribs sold by the fire department for $20 each.

Water Superintendent Harvey Beasley said advance orders may be placed at the Cardwell Community Building at 654-2112, or at the police department at 654-3535.

Bishop also said the mayor of Clarkton donated a rifle to be raffled off with tickets given by donation.

Money raised during the celebration will help pay for the veteran's memorial monument in front of the Cardwell Community Building.

The city still owes $1,088 on the monument, and Bishop said donations are welcome to help pay off the debt.

The council also heard from Shelley Davidson, who wants to open a new business at the old depot.

Davidson said her proposed business, "The Whistlestop," would add a different type of business in town with more than 4,000 products.

The council hesitated on the decision because the city owns the building, but the property the building is located on belongs to the railroad company.

The issue was tabled until the next meeting.

The next meeting of the Cardwell City Council is scheduled on July 15 at 6 p.m.
