Video contest for Missouri K-12 students tied to event

ROLLA, Mo.,-- Join the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Thursday, April 28 at 10:15 a.m. for the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut. More than one million people in an eight-state region are expected to participate.

Individuals, families, schools, universities, businesses, government agencies, faith-based organizations, medical facilities, community groups -- all are encouraged to register to participate in the drill, which will highlight "Drop, Cover and Hold On" and protective actions people should take when experiencing an earthquake.

The Department, along with other state, and federal and local emergency management experts all agree that Drop, Cover, and Hold On is the appropriate action to reduce the potential for injury during earthquakes. The ShakeOut is your opportunity to practice how to protect yourself during earthquakes.

Next year marks the 200th anniversary of a series of three earthquakes believed to have been a magnitude 7.0 or larger that occurred near the southeast Missouri town of New Madrid.

As a registered ShakeOut participant you will be counted in the largest earthquake drill in Central U.S. history. You will receive updates about ShakeOut news and information about earthquakes and preparedness. Set an example that motivates others to participate and get prepared.

Missouri K-12 students are also encouraged to enter the "Show-Me Earthquake Safety" video contest where they are invited to create a video that promotes earthquake awareness.
