SENATH, Mo. -- Jessica Howlett, a freshman at Senath-Hornersville High School at Senath, has been chosen as a member of the People to People Student Ambassador Program, which will land her overseas, where she and approximately 30 to 40 of her peers will travel and tour the continent of Europe, learning the culture and aspects of foreign education through this experience.
People to People Student Ambassador Programs provide international educational opportunities for middle school and high school students, who are invited to join the program.
Students who are invited to participate are chosen through a variety of ways, such as being nominated by teachers, former student ambassadors or even their parents.
Howlett expressed her gratitude for being accepted into the program and prays she raises enough money to carry forward.
"There's a lot of expense," Howlett said. "I'm hoping to come up with enough money to be able to make the trip this summer."
Howlett was interviewed and accepted based on her academic achievements which placed her in the top five-percent of students in the country.
People to People was founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who believed that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate directly, would solve their differences and find a way to live in peace.
This simple thought, that people can make a difference where government cannot, is People to People's foundation.
Since 1963, People to People Student Ambassador Programs have taken thousands of students across international borders to connect with people all over the world.
Howlett is inviting everyone to help her in her effort to make to Europe through this program.
Saturday, April 21, at the Senath State Bank Mid-County Branch at Kennett, a car wash will be held in an effort to raise funds for the trip. In addition to the car wash, a bake sale will be held Sunday, April 29 at Wal-Mart in Kennett.
Although the cost of tuition cannot be discussed, tuition varies by program and includes accommodations, meals and much more.
Jessica is the daughter of Lance and Beverly Mabry of Senath, and Eric and Suzanne Howlett, of Bono, Ark., the granddaughter of Jim and the late Christine Mabry, of Holcomb; Shirley and the late Glen Dalton of Senath; Curtis and Charlotte Howlett of Bragg City; and Sandra Clark of Jonesboro, Ark.
Those interested in helping Howlett with her trip may contact her family or make donations at the car at the Senath State Bank Mid-County Branch at Kennett or by purchasing baked goods at the bake sale at Wal-Mart at Kennett.
