CLARKTON, Mo. - Clarkton Reindeers took over seven charges on Monday night, Feb. 3, against the Southland Rebels en route to a conference win.

As the season comes closer to the end, each team is eager to add a win to their roster. Clarkton outscored Southland 54-51.

The Rebels outscored the Reindeers 16-9 in the first quarter, giving them the lead throughout most of the game. Clarkton Reindeers sought momentum, but shots were not falling in their favor through the first quarter.

Southland deflected the ball numerous times, leading to a few steals in the first half. Clarkton’s head coach devised a plan to create efficient shots and catch up in the second. Although Clarkton Reindeers scored eighteen points in the second quarter, Rebels obtained 19 points.

The majority of Southland’s points came from fast break plays, caused by their full-court defense. Braylan Cox secured 19 points alone in the first half for Southland. As many would say, his hand was “hot” or “on fire.”

Clarkton tried to take every opportunity to achieve the lead in the first half but fell short due to turnovers or missed shots. Clarkton did take advantage at the free-throw line, making three out of four free field goals.

As halftime passed, the Clarkton head coach believed in his players to make a comeback.

Taking a charge on the court is putting your body on the line for your team. It is a selfless play, but if you take a charge just right, it creates a foul against the shooter and gives the opposite team the possession.

Redden, Clarkton, took over four charges, earning more possessions on offense in the second half. It came natural to him, as he positioned himself so peacefully.

Momentum arose through the crowd at Clarkton, giving them confidence in their shots. Reindeers outscored the Rebels 10-8 in the third quarter. Southland gave too many fouls, leaving most of the Reindeers’ points at the free-throw line.

As Clarkton took advantage of each possession, frustrations from Southland became apparent.

Clarkton realized driving was their best option to gain the lead. They adjusted just right, scoring sixteen points in the 4th quarter. Rebels ended up finishing short with eight points giving the Clarkton Reindeers the win for the night.

Reindeers felt good about this win, as they fought hard throughout the night to maintain a lead. Taking care of the ball and operating as a team helped Clarkton acquire the win on Monday.

The Clarkton Reindeers advance their record to 5 wins and 14 losses.
