The Senath-Hornersville Middle School basketball team won the Bootheel Conference Tournament last week after defeating South Pemiscot 70-47.
The Eighth-grade Lions finished their season with a 14-2 record, with one of their only two losses being against South Pemiscot earlier in the season. This game set the stage, not only for who would be crowned the best team in the Bootheel Conference but to also settle a tie between the two teams.
In their first matchup against each other, Senath-Hornersville won by a near margin of three points. They beat South Pemiscot 57-54. However, the second time these two teams went head-to-head and South Pemiscot won 53-40.
To conclude their middle school season, the Lions finally prevailed over this ongoing rivalry in the Championship game.
It was still a close match, as Senath-Hornersville was only leading by one point at halftime. The score at the break was 27-26. However, they were able to pull away in the second half.
Chase Small led the Lions ball club with 20 points followed by Lawson Gurley who had 18 points. Chente Garza and Porter Franklin each added 14 points to the Lion's 70-point total.
Day Jones from South Pemiscot was his team’s leading scorer, matching Small with 20 points. His teammate Earl Jones finished with 11 points as they were the only two in double digits.
