HOLCOMB, Mo. - It was everything she had dreamed and hoped for.
On Monday, Jan. 20, Gabrielle (Gabi) Harmon of Holcomb signed a letter of intent to play golf at Williams Baptist University.
“I’m just incredibly happy,” Harmon said. “I feel blessed to have this opportunity to do the thing I love most at a bigger level.”
Harmon, who started golfing at 12 years old, said she immediately fell in love with the sport.
Throughout her high school career, has been playing with the Kennett Boys golf team due to low participation at Holcomb and a lack of female golfers.
Her dedication to finding a way to golf competitively in high school opened the eyes of scouts such as Jacob Webb at Williams Baptist.
According to Webb, he first heard about Harmon from a pro member at the Kennett Country Club. He hosted their WBU Fall Invitational there in September where Williams Baptists took third as a team.
Given the high demand for female golfers, he knew he had to recruit her as soon as possible.
“It was super important getting her on board,” Webb said. “Probably the hardest part of my job is finding girls that want to work hard to get better at golf, and stick with it.”
For Williams Baptist, Webb has a team of four female golfers. Three of these golfers will be seniors by the time Harmon joins them to play.
On the other side, the school has a full roster of 10 golfers. Webb was excited to continue building the women’s team with the addition of Harmon.
“She was super easy to work with,” Webb said. “I sent her an email and within a couple of weeks she was on campus for a visit. I gave her an offer and she was ready to commit.”
As effortless as it was for Webb, it was a “no-brainer” for Harmon as well.
She said she knew this was the school for her immediately.
“When I first met Coach Webb, I really liked his attitude,” Harmon said. “I loved the campus and it was the perfect fit for me. It’s so important that the university isn’t too far from home and will also help me grow my religion.”
As the Spring golf season approaches, both Harmon and the Kennett-Holcomb golf team will prepare for a strong showing. In the same manner, Williams Baptist will enter its Spring schedule starting in March.
Harmon said she wants to finish out her senior year on a high note with her Kennett teammates.
Meanwhile, Webb said he is excited to get to work with Harmon in the coming year.
