MALDEN, Mo. - The Senath-Hornersville Lions traveled to play in a Dunklin County matchup against the Malden Green Wave.
In this Bootheel Conference and MSHSAA Class 2 District 1 competition, Senath-Hornersville walked away as victors. They beat the Green Wave 72-42.
Lions head coach Kyle Moore believes this was their best game of the new year, if not the best game of the season.
“This was a good win,” Moore said. “We’ve played some good teams and kept it close, but we had a lethargic start to the second half of this season. We are finally getting back on pace with what we were doing in the first half of the season.”
According to Moore, since the start of 2025, this was probably the first game where the Lions won the first quarter and weren’t forced to fight from behind.
They outscored Malden 26-14 to start the game, with their main weapon of choice being the three-pointer. Six of Senath-Hornersville’s 10 made field goals were from beyond the arc in the first quarter.
Senior Noah Rhodes got things going for the Lions, sinking half of those three-pointers. He started out the gates with nine points, shooting three for four from three-point range.
Although he cooled off in the second quarter, the rest of his team followed suit. They made three more three-pointers in the second quarter to help extend their lead to 43-24, closing out the first half.
Ahead by 19 points, Moore was pleased with the shooting performance from his players.
“When we hit shots, we are hard to beat,” Moore said. “We have a bunch of guys who can shoot it too. We have around 14 or 15 guys sitting the bench, and all of them can play and most of them can shoot.”
The Lions knocked down 12 three-pointers throughout the contest. Sophomore Glacian Johnson led the team with four three-pointers of his own, finishing with 18 total points.
Right behind Johnson, fellow sophomore Cade Sawyer had 15 points while making three three-pointers.
Along with these two 10th graders, Senior Adyn (Spencer) Goff also had 11 points and one made three-pointer.
Despite their loss to Senath-Hornersivlle’s outside shooting, Malden did as much damage as they could in the paint. Most of the Green Wave’s points were scored from under the basket.
Moore gives credit to Malden’s backcourt.
“Those guys are huge and they are good,” Moore said. “They have a bunch of their points down there in the paint and I think they are going to be something to watch in two years later down the road. It took everything we had to guard those guys.”
Freshman post player Landon DeProw had 18 points in the paint, leading the Green Wave, while sophomore Zion Bell tacked on seven total points as the second-leading scorer.
As the Lions indulge in their two-game win streak, they will travel once more to Caruthersville in another Bootheel Conference matchup. This game will be on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, Malden will take the rest of this week off before they host Hayti on Tuesday, Jan. 21. This Class 2 District 1 matchup will also start at 7:30 p.m.
