I wish to emphasize to everyone again the importance of a smile. Smiling, if genuine and not pretentious, says a lot about a person. A smile can indicate that a person is kind. I cannot picture a person helping the needy with a frown on their face. Kindness to others puts a smile on your own face as well as those whom you help. (Matthew 7:12)...

(Matthew 7:12)

A smile shows friendliness. It indicates to others that you have a friendly disposition, will be easy to get along with, and would make a good friend. “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24)

A smile shows love. A child loves to see their mother’s smile because it indicates that they are loved. Smiles between sweethearts, or those married, shows love. Two things young men look for in a girlfriend are her smile and long hair. A smile is more attractive than any other feature of physical beauty. A sour or sad disposition is not attractive to others.

Generally, a woman who smiles indicates she possesses good character traits. As I said before, a smile shows kindness and friendliness. Kindness is a great character trait in a mate. Is she kind to children, the elderly, and those sick or infirmed? “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26) Conversely, a wife wants to see her husband’s smile and does not appreciate a dour disposition.

A smile may indicate a person’s spiritual condition as they rejoice in the Lord. “Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord…” (Philippians 3:1) Galatians 3:26-27 tells how one can get into the Lord. A Christian has a smile on his face and a song in his heart. “… Is any merry? Let him sing psalms.” (James 5: 13)

Smile because there is a God above who loves you! If you were the only person on this earth, God would have sent His Son to die for you. That’s great love! How could we not smile knowing about God’s love and care for man?

Depression is becoming a bigger problem today and the reasons are varied. What we think about, and are fixated upon, may be part of the problem. The Bible says, “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he …” (Proverbs 23:7) One should think on things true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report. (Philippians 4:8) “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22) Make up your mind to be happy and then put on a smile.

God made us and he knows what it takes for us to be happy. Foremost, we should avoid sin. Sin brings with it a broken spirit. Also, God knows we need physical work and exercise. Physical activity gives the mind a break from fretting, and allows us to see things clearer. Manual work gives one the feeling of accomplishing something worthwhile. Wasting time watching television or playing computer games leaves one feeling empty and depressed.

God designed the body to have sleep and rest. Without rest, one will feel mentally and physically drained. Jesus, after a physical day of teaching and healing, fell asleep in a boat while crossing the Sea of Galilee. (Matthew 8:24) Also, God knew man needed human contact and therefore designed families, friends and brethren. Just keep smiling!
