POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Enrollment at Three Rivers Community College has surged this summer, breaking college enrollment records for the third consecutive year.
Enrollment numbers report a 5.8 percent increase in the student body and a 10 percent increase in the number of credit hours in which students are enrolled for Summer 2009 classes at Three Rivers. The number of students enrolled this summer is 1,162; in 2008 there were 1,098 students enrolled and in 2007 there were 1,073 students enrolled at TRCC. The number of credit hours in which students are enrolled for Summer 2009 is 7,006; 6,354 credit hours were taken in Summer 2008 and 6,284 credit hours in 2007.
Many of these classes are online courses, as well as classes taught on the main college campus in Poplar Bluff and at centers and sites throughout Southeast Missouri.
According to Dr. Mary Lou Brown, chairman of the college's Division of Math, Science and Technology, students in the region know that Three Rivers offers the college courses that fit students' educational goals.
"The paradigm has shifted at Three Rivers. We are on a new road. The booming summer enrollment is just part of the many positive developments going on at Three Rivers Community College. We are reenergized and looking forward to continuing to provide quality education with superior results," Brown said.
Brown also noted that enrollment for Fall 2009 at Three Rivers is showing an increase over the same time period last year. She noted that as of June 17, there was an 8.7 percent increase in the student body and 6.5 percent increase in the number of credit hours enrolled over the same time in 2008.
Summer classes at Three Rivers began June 1. The full summer session continues until July 27; the shorter Session A ends June 22 and Session B will begin June 29 and classes will meet through July 27. Enrollment for Session B is open through June 29.
Registration for the Fall 2009 term at Three Rivers continues until July 12 and will reopen Aug. 11. New student orientation will be held Friday, July 31.
