An ongoing criminal investigation in Pemiscot County has led to the arrest of Caruthersville Police Chief Chris Riggs and Officer Marcus Hopkins.

Both Riggs and Hopkins were arrested and taken into custody on Wednesday, but were released on $200,000 bond.

Riggs was arrested on 24 counts of forgery and one count of stealing. Charges against Hopkins are for 11 counts of forgery.

The investigation was conducted by the Missouri Highway Patrol Drug and Crime Division.

"It is an ongoing criminal investigation right now and we have not concluded it," Trooper Clark Parrott with Troop E division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

When asked if there was a possibility of other charges being filed, he commented, "Possibly could be but it's an ongoing criminal investigation."

No further details are available at this time.

Riggs' commented briefly to area media outlets regarding the incident, saying only that he still held his position as police chief but was unable to provide any additional comment on the case.
