Fire crews from multiple agencies were on the scene at Lack’s Salvage Yard on Highway 84 West near the state line, where a fire broke out early Wednesday afternoon. No one was hurt.

Crews rushed to the scene at around 12:30 p.m. The fire burned through stacks of cars on the south end of the property, as the Kennett Fire Department struggled with an equipment failure and a lack of water supply in the area.

Kennett Fire Chief David Horton says there was an issue with one of the department’s trucks, temporarily halting its effort to spray water onto the fire. Horton said the problem slowed down the department’s response for a few minutes before it was corrected.

Horton said the fire was cause by trash fire at the scene. Crews from Hayti, Caruthersville and Senath to rush through Kennett to assist in the blaze. The mutual aid was called in part because of the mechanical issue on Kennett’s truck, and the lack of available part-time firefighters during the afternoon hours. Due to the lack of a water source in the area, some fire trucks had to race back to Kennett to refill with water.

The fire spread across several piles of cars in the salvage before it was finally contained. Lack’s Salvage owner Gene Lack is currently monitoring the scene as some of the piles slowly burn out.
