HAYTI HEIGHTS, Mo. — Law enforcement is investigating a murder after a family dispute left a Tennessee man dead and another man in jail after an incident in Hayti Heights Sunday afternoon.
According to a release from Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, Pemiscot County 911 received a call of a shooting at the Hayti Heights Park at 5:28 p.m. Sunday. The caller advised Hershel Grant had shot Robert Grant, 43, of Dyersburg, Tenn., and left the scene.
When officers arrived on scene they found approximately 300 people at the park attending a car show and that Robert Grant had been taken to the Hayti Hospital by a private vehicle.
Officers learned during the investigation that there had been an ongoing family dispute between Robert and Hershel Grant that resulted in the shooting.
Due to the large amount of people gathered at the park and the Hayti Hospital, deputies requested assistance with crowd control. Officers from the Hayti Police Department, Caruthersville Police Department, Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, Kennett Police Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol responded and assisted and there were no further incidents.
Hershel Grant’s father contacted the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office and told them he thought he knew where Hershel was and planned to talk to him and get him to surrender.
At 6:11 p.m. Hershel Grant was arrested without incident by Capt. Michael Coleman of the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office. Grant is currently in the Pemiscot County Jail and charges of first degree murder and armed criminal action are expected to be filed this morning by the Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney.
