Who’s the sheriff?

That’s the million dollar question following Tuesday’s election after the miscount of votes.

I know there are many questions being asked and rumors spreading throughout the County.

How did this happen?

How do you miss an entire box of ballots?

To deem it just an accident doesn’t seem enough at first glance.

But, I believe that’s what it was, an accident.

An extremely unfortunate one, but an accident just the same.

I know Dunklin County Clerk Kent Hampton and his staff, and there’s not a more upstanding local government office.

They messed up. They made a mistake, and they know it, and they’re going to try and fix it the best way possible.

No one wants to see an election in question.

I tell you what shows the character of Hampton in my eyes.

He owned it. He took responsibility for every part of it.

In this age of blame and excuse-giving that’s refreshing.

Sheriff candidates Darter and Waynick have both acknowledged they want the will of the people to be heard.

A recount is scheduled for Monday, and we’ll have a new sheriff.

Hopefully, we can all come together and support whichever one of these fine men takes that office, and move on from this.

Regrettably there will always be lingering questions on this particular election, but let us remember, mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.

Hampton did that.
